Yangtze giant soft-shell turtles… how you can help
December 7th, 2007
As I discussed earlier, there are two known Yangtze giant soft-shell turtles left in the world. One is male. The other is female. This is the last chance for a seminal species.
We must do all we can to help this species survive.
Here’s how:
Gerald Kuchling referred me to you, I am the Co-Chair of the IUCN Turtle Survival Alliance www.turtlesurvival.org a global partnership organization dedicated to preventing turtle extinctions. We will be involved in moving the female Rafetus from Changsha to Suzhou, providing logistical and technical support, veterinary support, sending Gerald back this month and again in the Spring to oversee the move, etc. We have lined up an insurance company to cover the animal at the request of the Chinese. This is going to be a very high profile move and in the end we will either come out looking like heroes or villains, but we have no choice but to try, right? And as you might expect this will be a very costly endeavor.
If you have supporters that want to help financially, we are a nonprofit corporation registered in Texas. We can accept wire transfers or checks, made payable to TSA and mailed to:

You can donate directly on their site. Dear reader, can you give (at least) $25 to this worthy cause?
